I noticed OpenStreetMap being used by universities in Germany. Initially I'm impressed by its development and potential use instead of reliance on Google maps.

I'll just drop this here... As this is nothing "new" people have been "degoogling" for years now ...
Whole list for every service/app/suite they offer and an alternative(s) for it.

I've been trying to replace Google for several years and it isn't going well. Google Maps is a lot more useable than OpenStreetMap, MapQuest and every other mapping tool I've used. On my non-Google phone (LineageOS) I don't have a mapping app. When I need mapping, I take my phone with all the Google Apps on it. I don't see getting rid of Google anytime soon in my life (unfortunately).

I've been using Organic Maps, it uses the openstreetmap data with additional off-road trails, elevation and such.
