Problem with Wi-Fi after installing xubuntu 18.04

I installed xubuntu 18.04 on an old HP laptop that I know was wi-fi capable. During the installation, it didn't ask me for a wi-fi password. I think the installer couldn't see the wireless device. It's possible I may have accidentally hit the button that turns the wifi on/off.
Anyway, my problem is that I have no wifi on it now. Can anyone tell me how to get xubuntu to rescan the hardware, locate the wireless device and allow me to use wifi?

If it makes a difference, it's a 32 bit machine.

If that doesn’t show any devices your WiFi card could very well have been removed from the kernel modules as it’s an older machine and you’d then have to figure out what WiFi card you have in the machine and install the modules etc yourself.. or go to an older Ubuntu release where it was known to work...

I had this problem with my notebook but have a USB stick with WI FI on it I bought years ago and still working good happened on my present notebook as HP has problems too. Most likely be at library meeting.
