Hello,  I am using Ubuntu Desktop LTS 18.04 with the Unity desktop instead of the default Gnome desktop that comes with 18.04. Unity is the old one that you'll see on Ubuntu 16.04.
 I have a college assignment from English 102, and we have to write a paper on a play, and it makes it easier to watch the play a few times, then refer back to the writing for the paper. I got a DVD from my college on the play and I am having troubles playing the DVD on Ubuntu.
 I think the DVD player works, but I can't seem to finesse VLC to work. Maybe I am getting the wrong /dev/ device?

Well you have a problem and I am not sure it is the fault of
Ubuntu.  I am using Lubuntu 18.04 and Gnome MPV plays DVD's just
fine.  Different desktop environment of course.  Perhaps you should

Try downloading/installing via  the ubuntu "snap" CLI module available from the official vlc website.  ~0.0.
