How to Play DVD on Ubuntu

From Eliter Awesomeness · Apr 26, 2019

Hello,
I am using Ubuntu Desktop LTS 18.04 with the Unity desktop instead of the default Gnome desktop that comes with 18.04. Unity is the old one that you'll see on Ubuntu 16.04.
I have a college assignment from English 102, and we have to write a paper on a play, and it makes it easier to watch the play a few times, then refer back to the writing for the paper. I got a DVD from my college on the play and I am having troubles playing the DVD on Ubuntu.
I think the DVD player works, but I can't seem to finesse VLC to work. Maybe I am getting the wrong /dev/ device?

Thanks,
Eli D.

I know this doesn't help, but it's a good example of why I went back to mac...I'm running 16 on another computer and never could get google earth or skype to work. Afraid to upgrade to 18 and run into even more problems....

Well you have a problem and I am not sure it is the fault of Ubuntu.  I am using Lubuntu 18.04 and Gnome MPV plays DVD's just fine.  Different desktop environment of course.  Perhaps you should install another DVD player application.

Try downloading/installing via  the ubuntu "snap" CLI module available from the official vlc website.
~0.0.
