how to install waterfox-55.2.2.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2
firefox updated me to quantum and many of the add ons got dropped. I researched how to downgrade to 56, but because of lack ongoing security issues, there was a suggestion to try waterfox which I assume uses the legacy extensions. I downloaded the tar but know how to install it....

Waterfox is just Firefox with few minor differences... So any issues you'd have with Firefox they'd be present in waterfox.

well, i've got a much bigger problem! I had 3 partitions, I deleted the one with Mint, and now my ubuntu 16.04 wont' boot. get this error: no such partition. entering rescue mode...grub rescue>
I researched online but, man this is way over my head. This is one thing I found but I've learned the hard way not to do commands when you don't understand what you're doing....
I also will want to either delete or downsize the partition with ubuntu 14 on it. I think part of the problem might be that 16.04 was the last partition i added. On the gpart menu it is on the right of the box/graph that shows the relative size of the partition....
anyway, I hope there is a easy solution for my main computer, I'm left with only an old laptop minus a lot of my files and music etc.
Try the following ..
grub rescue > ls (hd0) (hd0,msdos5) (hd0,msdos3) (hd0,msdos2) (hd0,msdos1) (hd1) (hd1,msdos1) grub rescue > ls (hd0,msdos1) # try to recognize which partition is this grub rescue > ls (hd0,msdos2) # let's assume this is the linux partition grub rescue > set root=(hd0,msdos2) grub rescue > set prefix=(hd0,msdos2)/boot/grub # or wherever grub is installed grub rescue > insmod normal # if this produced an error, reset root and prefix to something else .. grub rescue > normal
For a permanent fix run the following after you successfully boot:
sudo update-grub sudo grub-install /dev/sdX
where /dev/sdX is your boot drive.

So, you email an article about the dangers of dual boot set ups, and then you don't assist some one who took your advice and in the process lost their boot partition...
I have found numerous fixes for the the grub rescue, they are all different and some rather involved. I have attached some of these, do you have an opinion on which of these would be advisable?
And, worst case scenario: I have a time shift back up on the HD which I assume I could access using a live DVD. Do you know where I can find that back up file, and could I use it that file to reinstall 16.04 after I reformat the drive. How would I install that file?
