Will changing the desktop environment from KDE to Xfce leave “residual weight” or aspects of KDE in comparison to a clean install Xfce?

Depending upon what you define as "residual weight", the answer is probably yes.  Apparently KDE has never played well with others and that continues to a certain degree even today.  However, if you purge the KDE meta-package after installing xfce you should not have a problem.  If you intend to keep both DE's on your computer then you may run into problems.

Here's a list of most the "weight" it'll be leaving

Holy. Moly! Thank you. Several years ago I stumbled across a Xfce distro with the application launcher set to the mouse right click button, which I thoroughly enjoy to this day. I have set the launcher in KDE, though I’m inclined to the simplicity of Xfce with its longer version increments and lightweight upon computer hardware. I’m going to use the CachyOS tuned kernel with the Xfce DE to maximize the responsiveness of my 8 year old laptop. Buying a new laptop just doesn’t feel necessary nor desired. This Thinkpad T470s is connected with a thunderbolt hub, 2 monitors, an audio DAC/amp, and wireless mouse/keyboard, and I’m not seeing any “death” of the laptop in the next 3+ years for my usage pattern.

Rex, thanks for the response regarding multiple DEs  vs a clean install with the desired DE.
