I finally re-installed UbuntuMate 20.04 again, hoping and assuring myself that they must have gotten the bugs out since I last tried. Vain Hope! It still appears to be incompatible with my printer. And this time I uninstalled Mate 18, which left me without a working printer.   I installed 20.04 on the fastest disk on my computer (Built in Solid state 250 GB memory - /dev/nvme0n1).

So, I installed also (on a slower non solid state internal disk) Mint-Mate (the most up-to-date version). It is based, I understand, on Ubuntu 20.04. Mint did it right, and flawlessly. without any special attention. It works flawlessly. I don't like Mint-Mate as well, but that's probably because I'm more accustomed to the non Mint version. Still, I'd like to get my printer working on Ubuntu-Mate on the faster disk.  Any suggestions? My printer is HP officeJet 4650  an 'all-in-one' printer. In Ubuntu Mate, 20.04 didn't have any trouble finding and installing it as -something-, but it can't seem to find it when I try to use it as a printer. I get the message that it is 'not connected'. It is connected by USB.

before doing anything make sure that you’re repositories are up-to-date.

sudo apt update & upgrade 

I’ve done that installing through installing HPLIP, you can get it straight from apt repositories like below:

sudo apt install hplip hplip-data hplip-doc hpijs-ppds hplip-gui hplip-dbg printer-driver-hpcups printer-driver-hpijs printer-driver-pxljr 

or download the intended file from origin website for you’re specific OS.

I had some problems to run it, so installed some dependencies and it fixed.

sudo apt install   python3-pyqt4 gtk2-engines-pixbuf python3-dbus.mainloop.qt 

then it warned me about the plugin is not installed so installed it this way.

sudo hp-plugin -i -g 

then it was working for me.
