If there is no battery I assume the mac won't turn on (early mac books won't turn on, I don't imagine apple changed their policy on that -- they want to make sure you have to keep buying stuff from them. I just looked up the specs of the retina mac pro from those years and discovered that the ram is soldered to board and is not replaceable!) hence we don't know if it will boot, or even if there is a HD in it.
Visually can u remember if it was the super thin retina model or the older thicker one?
