I'm still very new to ubuntu and maybe I'm not going about this the right way?  I have ubuntu 18.04.01 installed on an old laptop.  I would like to download some videos (mainly youtube, and a few others).  I searched the software and found about 5 programs.    Most want you to pay, and I don't have a problem with that, after I see something work.  The free ones don't work after installing and launching.  One flashes a terminal window on the screen and then quickly closes it so you can't possibly read what it says is wrong.  Is there a way to force the terminal window to stay open?
Anybody got a suggestion for a good video downloader?  If so, please let me know.  Also let me know if it is pay or free.  I would prefer that if it's pay, that you get to try it a couple of times, before paying.

This is the one that opens a terminal window, flashes some message and then closes the window before you can read what it says.
Any way to stop it from closing the window so I can read the text?

click on tools in the menu on the top of browser, click on Add ons, then either type in  these few that I use most, and you can search for video download addons. The only bummer is that often when firefox upgrades some of the addons don't work anymore, usually the one you like the most.

I did finally get youtube-dl to work.  I tried the gydl gui but it's really crappy, no support, etc.  What gui do you use?  Does it work well?

Jdownloader2 is perfectly stable.. and other than needing java installed too I always had installed it from AUR so never had any issues with any sh files or the utf -8 issue

This is perhaps the most frustrating web site I've ever seen.  Unless I'm missing something, the only thing you can download from this website is jdownloader2 which is beta software.  If you know where you can download the non-beta version please let me know. 

So, I thought I'd try the beta software.  I downloaded the linux 64 bit file (with a file extension of .sh).  When I try to open it, it tells me that it's not utf-8 format.

Am I missing something?
