So I have a desktop with Ubuntu LTS 16.04, and a laptop with Ubuntu LTS 18.04 (with Unity desktop). When the Ubuntu 20.04 release comes around, I want to upgrade all my stuff. I want to check out other desktop environments, as I have a feeling Unity won't be supported very well, for much longer. Something that I really HATE about gnome is that it takes up too much vertical screen real estate, which could be used for other, more useful things. I like how, in Ubuntu, you can full screen a window, and when you hover over the top bar (menu bar), it would give you options specifically related to the window. (file, edit, view, history, tools, help).
Now, with Gnome none of that crap happens. It's all just useless crap on the top, with redundant stuff, that I can already get to on the left side of the screen, and it presents a double-bar, the window has a bar, and the desktop environment itself has a bar.
So, are there any alternative desktop environments, that has the menu bar? Perhaps, officially supported by Ubuntu?

totally agree, in fact though I have updated to 18.04 on my laptop, and added the unity also, I'm staying with 16 on my desktop. But sorry can't help with a good desktop alternative....

Just so you know, Charles Breaux  chazbreaux@gmail.com , Ubuntu 16.04 is going to be out-of-support after April 2021. The releases on the even years, on April, are only supported for 5 years. I'm finding that even though 16.04 is still supported and "good", and all that, a lot of software doesn't even support it, with many outdated features, that are found updated on new desktop versions, like 18.04.

Unity desktop is no longer supported by Canonical.  It is currently community supported.  Devi has previously submitted a URL reference Unity and its future when version 8 is released.  Reference your question about desktop environments:  The ones that are officially supported by Canonical are Gnome, KDE, XFCE, LXDE, LXQT, Budgie, and Mate. There are probably an addition 15-20 DE's that are not installed by default and are not officially supported as a flavor of Ubuntu.  If you are concerned about a panel taking up space on your monitor you can always decrease the size of the panel or hide it.  Ubuntu has an option in settings that will hide the Dash (which is the quick launch panel installed on the left of your screen by default).  In other DE's the option is located in preferences.  For instance In LXDE, you right click on the panel and change your options.  Each DE probably has a different way to do this.
