[meeting notes] UBUNTU HOUR 2019-03-14

From Devi Garcia · Mar 14, 2019

Attendees: 5

Upcoming Events:

  • 23 March, CLUG Meeting, 1300-1545, SVPL conference room, 2600 East Tacoma Street, Sierra Vista
  • 11 April, Sierra Vista Ubuntu Hour, Schlotzsky’s Cafe, 1800-1900, 3900 Fry Blvd, Sierra Vista

Discussion:

  • Discussed the upcoming Installfest at Livia’s Coffee on 04 May.
  • A member discussed a problem that he had with a Western Digital 1 Tb hard drive that he had been using for storage which apparently caused the desktop to freeze. After a hard shutdown, the computer restarted with no apparent damage to anything but the storage hard drive. (The hard drive died and has subsequently been discarded.) Interesting since the hard drive was not that old and was not subject to multiple mounting and unmounting.
  • Also discussed was the inability to get an Epson ET-2550 printer to function correctly on a Ubuntu System after doing everything that the Epson website said to do and trying multiple drivers.

If my primary back-up system is an external hard-drive, I'm a little
edgy about what to do now.

In other words, how should I back up my back up?

So I would definitely recommend using a RAID setup. For very important stuff, I would recommend using RAID 1. If you have multiple drives (i.e. 3 drives or more), I would recommend using RAID 5 or RAID 6. I would also recommend making off-site backups, i.e. Google Drive, Amazon cloud thing, Backblaze, Dropbox, etc.. I don't mind giving you a few moments of my time, if you'd like to have a phone call. Just give me a time and we could talk for a bit about your situation. I am no expert, but I have an interest in this type of thing and have done a bit of research already.

Thanks,
Eli D.
