using a Linux OS (mint), am I under significant risk if i logout vs shutdown each night? ...with 3 computers it is somewhat inconvenient to wait for 3 startups every day.

+1.  If you have your screen saver set to lock
the screen after a certain time, that should be sufficient. 
Logging off is not necessary because your password is required to

Sulpher springs power company often has power interruptions, sometimes just on and off blip. Hence I'm in the habit of turning my computers off when not in use. How does the danger of power interruptions enter into the equation as to whether it is prudent to turn off the computers or not?
