Announcements:

  • Ubuntu 21.04 has been released. New features: Wayland is now the default. Your home folder is now private by default. There is now a recovery key for encrypted installs. Comes with Linux Kernel 5.11 and Python 3.9. However, it is not a LTS release.
  • There will be no more point releases for Ubuntu 18.04 after the August 2020 release of Ubuntu 18.04.5. However, Canonical will continue to release updates. All “flavors” of 18.04 have reached their EOL last April.

Discussion:

  • Discussed the possibility of using a Ubuntu mini-install at our installfests.
  • Discussed the possible dates for our next Linux Workshop/mini-installfest.
  • Discussed Manjaro vs Endeavour and their relationship to Arch Linux.
  • Discussed alternatives to Firefox browser, specifically Chromium and Brave
  • A question was raised about Ubuntu Updates. Specifically should a person with a Linux Mint install be concerned with Ubuntu updates since Mint is based on Ubuntu. Short answer is no. Just make sure that the Linux Mint updates are installed.
